History

Where Did George P. Gibbs Little League Originate?

By Ellen C. Finizio

How many Sterling active...and inactive little league historians have any idea where the name George P. Gibbs Sterling Little League may have came from?

Recently I had the opportunity to speak to Mary Beth Aubrey .  She was very anxious to share with me the memories she has of her late grandfather, George (DoDo) Gibbs.

Sterling Little League was actually called Wachusett Little League, and was changed to George P. Gibbs in December, 1974 when Mr. Gibbs passed away.  “DoDo” a name that stuck to George from his granddaughter Christine, was very active in baseball.  “He loved every minute of it,” explained Mary Beth. Also an avid Red Sox fan, DoDo began coaching in the 1970’s.  He coached his grandson Rick, while also coaching a Babe Ruth team, and presented the trophy to the winning team of the 1973 Babe Ruth World Series team, which was televised.

“He really loved baseball,” said Mary Beth.  “When Sterling needed a new playing field, he almost single-handedly, reshaped, resodded and rebuilt the field,” which they ended up eventually naming after him.

DoDo died in 1974, leaving the league a generous donation, stating that he never wanted anyone to go without uniforms because they couldn’t afford them.

“It would truly make him happy to see how Sterling has grown and become quite a competitor in baseball,” explained MaryBeth.  George’s love and enthusiasm for Sterling kids and baseball will always be remembered.  He would have been very proud that the league was named after him.”
